The authority was founded on October 1, 1973 as the Federal Office for Civilian Service and was exclusively responsible for civilian service in Germany until 2011 . The office was renamed the Federal Office for Family and Civil Society Tasks on May 3, 2011 (Section 14 (1) of the Federal Voluntary Service Act ).

In addition, the Federal Office was entrusted with other tasks: The handling of various programs of the European Social Fund as well as support services for programs in the area of "old age and care". Organizationally, the office of the Contergan Foundation, the management of the federal program “PROMOTE TOLERANCE - STRENGTHEN COMPETENCE” and the federal service point “Action together / Multi-generation houses” were assigned to the new Federal Office . The reason for the renaming was the change in the framework conditions such as the end of community service due to the suspension of compulsory military service in Germany and the reorganization of the authorities.
