Federal youth singing

The National Youth Singing is a youth choir festival every three years in another since 1948 Austrian province is performed. In the preliminary competitions at the district level, the children's and youth choirs qualify for regional youth singing. The best choirs of the respective federal state take part in the federal youth singing.

This competition has existed since 1948 and is designed to promote school and extracurricular choral singing in Austria. 2,000 young singers took part in the 1st Federal Youth Singing on July 8, 1948, which was held in Vienna . Initially, the competitions took place annually until the decision was made in 1953 to hold the district, state and federal competitions every three years.

In 1977 Erwin Ortner was there for the first time as artistic director. He is the founder and artistic director of the Arnold Schönberg Choir and chairman of the jury and, together with Claudia Kettenbach and Johannes Prinz, forms the overall artistic direction of the national youth singing. 

In 1984 the agendas passed from the Ministry of Education to the newly established Federal Ministry for Family, Youth and Consumer Protection (BMJF).

The organizers are the Federal Ministry for Family and Youth, the Federal Ministry for Education and Women and the youth departments of the respective countries.

From June 23 to 26, 2017, the Federal Youth Singing will take place again after 27 years in Styria , in Graz . So far, Styria has carried out two federal youth singings in 1962 and 1989, under the leadership of the state youth department at the office of the Styrian state government. In 2017, the Youth Department of Department 6, Society Department in cooperation with the BMJF, is responsible for implementation.
