The Federal Association of German Undertakers (BDB) is the industry association of undertakers in Germany.

State associations and state guilds are affiliated to the association. According to his own statements, he represents around 80% of German funeral homes through them; that is about 3200 companies. He also sees himself as a representative of the interests of the German crematoria .

History and organization

The association was founded by German undertakers under the leadership of the Düsseldorf undertaker Theo Remmertz on March 23, 1948. Christian Streidt has been the association's president since April 26, 2012. The honorary presidency is held by Wolfgang Zocher . Stephan Neuser is the Secretary General.

Several independent organizations have emerged from the association that perform various tasks.

Kuratorium Deutsche Bestattungskultur e. V .: deals with the change in funeral culture in public events, publications and funding projects. Oliver Wirthmann is the managing director.
Humatia - Foundation for Sepulchral Culture : supports research and teaching projects in the areas of Sepulchral Culture - from dealing with death in society to burial culture and grief psychology.

Deutsche Bestattungsvorsorge Treuhand AG : is an institution of the profession for the fiduciary administration of the pension funds paid in for the future funeral.

Fachverlag des Deutschen Bestattungsgewerbes GmbH : it offers books on funeral and mourning culture, CDs on funeral music, posters, videos and articles of condolence. In addition, the publisher publishes a monthly trade journal for the members of the BDB called funeral culture, in which economic and legal issues in the funeral industry as well as socially relevant debates on death and burial are taken up.

German Institute for Thanatopraxie GmbH : The German Institute for Thanatopraxie GmbH, Düsseldorf, is currently responsible for training to become a thanatopractor. Thanatopraxia includes all activities that are necessary in order to be able to carry out an aesthetic as well as hygienic laying out of a deceased person. For international transfers, thanatopractic treatment is often mandatory.

Theo-Remmertz-Akademie eV : is the provider of the inter-company training (ÜLU) for the training occupation funeral specialist at the federal training center for undertakers in Münnerstadt. In addition to training as a funeral specialist, the academy offers further training to become a certified undertaker and undertaker .

Kuratorium Deutsche Bestattungskultur GmbH : In cooperation with Nürnberger Versicherung AG, the Kuratorium offers death benefit insurance and funeral care package insurance.

TransRep International GmbH : is a service facility for undertakers and specializes in the transfer of deceased persons by land and air abroad or the repatriation from abroad.

BEFA Messegesellschaft GmbH : organizes international and regional funeral trade fairs at which suppliers from the funeral, crematorium and cemetery industries are represented. In addition to national and international exhibitors who present technologies and services from their business areas, the change in funeral culture will be highlighted in panel discussions from a political, religious and scientific point of view.
