The Bundesverband Dyslexia and Dyscalculia eV (BVL) is a non-profit association of parents, affected people and those interested in the problem of dyslexia and / or dyscalculia , which is supported in its objectives by educators, doctors, psychologists and other scientists. The purpose of the association is, among other things, to safeguard the interests of people with reading and spelling weaknesses and arithmetic weaknesses, in particular with reading and spelling disorders (dyslexia) and arithmetic disorders (dyscalculia).

history

The "Federal Association of Dyslexia" (as it was then called) was founded on April 24, 1974 as a parent self-help association. Carola Thole was the “engine” behind the founding of the association. There was no way to get support for this problem back then. Dyslexia and dyscalculia were hardly known, let alone recognized. The establishment of a self-help association created the possibility of interdisciplinary exchange. Doctors and scientists were called in in the early years to create a sound basis for defining and researching the problem of dyslexia and finding therapy and support approaches. The BVL has been holding specialist congresses (today the “Federal Congress”) since 1975. The Scientific Advisory Board and federal commissioners make their expert knowledge available and maintain contacts with the bodies that are important for their specialist area.

The association has been based in Hanover since 1987 .

Since 2003 the association has been called "Bundesverband Dyslexia and Dyscalculia eV". The addition of the name to the outside world signaled that the association is also intensively committed to the interests of those affected with dyscalculia. The topic of dyscalculia has been anchored in the statutes (§ 2 Purpose and Task) since 1990.

Today the BVL and its regional associations (LVL) form a strong lobby for those affected.

Mission statement and activities

In accordance with its mission statement, the association advises and supports those affected, teachers, therapists and learners.

The BVL offers specialist information, organizes specialist congresses and is in dialogue with science.

The BVL and its regional associations represent the interests of members and those affected and are committed to better framework conditions in school, training, working life and society, as well as more understanding for people with dyslexia and dyscalculia.

Through its public relations work, the association wants to increase social awareness and acceptance of people with dyslexia or dyscalculia.

In 2016, the BVL, together with Deutsche Kinderhilfe , declared September 30th as a nationwide day of action for dyslexia and dyscalculia.

structure

Under the umbrella of the Federal Association of Dyslexia and Dyscalculia there are 14 regional associations in which there are a large number of groups and local contacts as well as 2 regional representatives. Some of the regional associations also have district associations.

The state representatives, state associations, district and local groups offer competent advice and information, mostly on a voluntary basis from the perspective of those affected or relatives of those affected. The offers on site include not only parent groups, but also information events and specialist conferences.

Due to the federal structure of the education system in Germany, it is also the task of the regional associations to influence the legislation in the interests of those affected.

In addition, there is the “Junge Aktive”, a group of adolescents and young adults with dyslexia and / or dyscalculia between the ages of 15 and 35 who work nationwide. The group supports the exchange and networking and advocates more public education on the topics of dyslexia and dyscalculia.

BVL eV is a member of the EDA (European Dyslexia Association) and the International Dyslexia Association.

BVL certificate for training quality

The BVL has developed a standard that aims to ensure the quality of training and qualifications of dyslexia and dyscalculia therapists. Training institutions that apply and meet the requirements are checked and receive the BVL certificate.

The training includes a theoretical and a practical part. After successfully completing the course at one of these facilities, therapists bear the title “Dyslexia therapist according to BVL” ® or “Dyscalculia therapist according to BVL”.

The medical guideline "Diagnosis and treatment of arithmetic disorder" refers u. a. to the standard created by the BVL.

Publications

The BVL's member magazine LEDY appears quarterly (ISSN 1866-3672).

The BVL publishes numerous information brochures on dyslexia and dyscalculia.
