The Federal Association of Stuttering & Self-Help e. V. ( BVSS for short ) is a non-profit association representing the interests of stuttering people in Germany and - according to its own statements - the only German organization that provides comprehensive and independent information and advice on the topic of stuttering .

History and structure

BVSS was founded in Oberthal in 1979 . It emerged as a nationwide association of self-help people who speak stuttering with the statutory goals of "counteracting the development of stuttering" and "improving the living conditions of stuttering people".

Organized as independent associations, there are seven regional associations that are responsible for supporting around 90 self-help groups:

  • State Association of Stuttering & Self-Help NRW e. V.
  • State Association of Stuttering & Self-Help Baden-Württemberg e. V.
  • Landesverband Hessen der Stutterer-Selbsthilfe e. V. Hessen
  • State Association of Stuttering & Self-Help Bavaria e. V.
  • Regional Association of Stuttering & Self-Help North e. V.
  • Stuttering & Self-Help Landesverband Ost e. V.
  • State Association of Stuttering & Self-Help Rhineland-Palatinate / Saarland e. V.

The regional associations are the sponsors of the annual federal stuttering & self-help congress in a city within their respective catchment area and also offer various seminars for further training, qualification and development of stuttering speaking people.

As part of a project funded by the Federal Ministry of Health from 2011 to 2015, the so-called flow speaking groups were created to motivate young stutterers to do self-help work. In addition to the conventional self-help groups of the BVSS, there are now flow groups in over 15 cities in Germany.

tasks

According to its own description, the association has the following tasks:

Enabling self-help and seminars through the promotion and establishment as well as the organization of self-help groups for stuttering people and the organization of seminars for those affected and their families.

Information and education should be made possible through materials for initial information, public relations and campaigns, literature, guides, children's books and films.

The association also sees lobbying and cooperation as a task . The BVSS calls for the dismantling of discrimination, prevention and school support and clarity about the relevant legal bases. Finally, counseling and therapy are another goal.

Projects

The BVSS initiates and develops special questions about stuttering fluency in the form of projects:

  • Start-ups: With a project to specifically found new self-help groups, the BVSS would like to close “blind spots” on the map and enable more people affected to participate in active self-help in the future.
  • Qualification: The federal association has appointed volunteer agents in the individual regional associations and regions to support the establishment and ongoing maintenance of the stutterer self-help groups. So that the BVSS can support them as needed, it regularly offers further training events for the self-help officers.
  • Rights of stuttering people: In 2008, the BVSS initiated the creation of an analysis funded by the community funding of the health insurance companies, which should clarify the laws, ordinances and decisions relevant to disability stuttering at federal and state level. The focus of this study is on the states of Bavaria, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saarland as well as the legal situation in the area of stuttering and school as well as stuttering and finding a job.

Publications

  • Membership magazine : Der Kieselstein (appears quarterly)
  • In addition, Demosthenes-Verlag publishes books and videos exclusively on the subject of stuttering.
