The castle Olsztyn was a major German Order Castle in the East Prussian city of Olsztyn, today Olsztyn . With her the transition was controlled by all . Later the castle became the seat of the canons of the cathedral chapter in Warmia .
history
From 1353 to 1360 the Ordensburg was built on a square plan on the steep slope above the Alley. The dungeon was raised late 14th century by nine floors. The roof was not put on until 1926. The second tower no longer exists. In addition to the farm buildings and stables, there was also a prison.
In the middle of the 18th century, when the complex lost its ability to defend itself, the height of the 11-meter-high walls was reduced and a dam was built up through which the castle could be reached from the city. In 1758 the baroque-classicist building was erected in the east to offer the canons of the cathedral chapter contemporary accommodation. In the age of romanticism, Friedrich Leopold Schimmelpfennig redesigned the castle to its present form.
In the castle courtyard there is an archaic female figure, the little stone mother or babe. The Museum of Warmia and Mazury has been housed in the castle since 1921 .
Trivia
Nicolaus Copernicus stayed here in 1516, 1524, 1531, 1535 and 1538. A monument in his honor was erected in the park by the bridge on the initiative of the German Emperor Wilhelm II. The construction was financed from his private box with 10,000 Reichsmarks and in November 1916 - 400 years after Copernicus began his service in Allenstein. The protective roof is lost today and the monument now bears a Polish inscription. There is another monument in the courtyard.
