Baasem Castle

The Baasem Castle is a lost moated castle in Baasem , a district of Dahlem in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The castle probably emerged from a manor house , which was mentioned as "Basen villare" as early as 950 in a document from King Otto .

In the High Middle Ages a local noble family became known, which died out at the end of the Middle Ages . This made the castle a simple noble mansion . The castle was put on record again in the 17th century when it was sold by Heinrich von Elverfeldt to Johann von Heimbach in 1606, including "Graben, Weyern, Hoff". He sold it to Friedrich von Engelberg in 1649. The later impoverished von Engelberg family remained owners until the 18th century.

The moated castle, located southwest of the church , was probably abandoned and demolished as early as the 18th century.
