The castle Drežnik (Croatian: Stari grad Drežnik or Tvrđava Drežnik ) is the ruins of a hilltop castle in the central Croatian town of Drežnik Grad on the territory of the municipality Rakovica about ten kilometers northeast of the Plitvice Lakes National Park .
According to historical sources, it was first mentioned in 1185. The owners of the complex were members of the noble families Nelipić , Güssing and Babonić in the 13th to 16th centuries . From 1321 it was owned by the Frankopan family . The Ottomans conquered it in 1592, but in February 1788 it was under the Austrian General Daniel Peharnik-Hotkovich two days besieged and then recaptured.
Drežnik lies above the gorge of the Korana river , where it turns east to form the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina . The castle was an important part of a chain of fortified defense structures in central Croatia, which served to defend against the Ottoman attacks.
The facility has an irregular, square shape with two square control rooms and one round control room. Since April 17, 1917, it has been under the care of the municipality, which, after years of neglect and deterioration into ruins, recently initiated a restoration of the remains.
