The Falkenstein Castle is an Outbound high medieval hilltop castle on the rocky peaks on the western edge of the valley of the Alps above the present city of Bad Herrenalb in Baden-Württemberg Calw .
history
The castle was built in the early 12th century by the Lords of Eberstein in the uninhabited Alb valley. The castles of that time served as the center of power to develop the surrounding region. With the founding of the Herrenalb Cistercian monastery in the middle of the 12th century, Falkenstein Castle lost this function. Presumably it was given up again at this time and the stones were used in the construction of the monastery.
Remains of the neck ditch and the shield wall can still be seen from the castle on today's lookout rock.
