Fukuoka Castle

The castle Fukuoka ( Japanese 福岡城 , Fukuoka-jō ) is located in the city of Fukuoka , Fukuoka Prefecture . In the Edo period , the Kuroda resided there , who with an income of 523,000 koku belonged to the great Tozama daimyo .

history

Kobayakawa Hideaki ( 小早川 秀 秋 ) originally built a castle called Najima ( 名 島 ) in Chikuzen Province in 1588 . In its time it was one of the three castles with ties to Oda Nobunaga or Toyotomi Hideyoshi . The other two castles were Nakatsu in Buzen Province and Yatsushiro in Higo Province .

After the Battle of Sekigahara , the province of Chikuzen came to Kuroda Nagamasa ( 黒 田 長 政 ; 1568–1623). Nagamasa gave up Najima and built the current castle, which he called Fukuoka , 300 m southwest in place of the old-time welcome house, the Kōrokan ( 鴻臚 館 ).

The attachment

(Explanations in the text)

Fukuoka Castle is located on the plain with a view to the north of the Genkai Sea Region ( 玄 界 灘 , Genkai-nada ). In the west, the castle is protected by the Ōbori pond, which is more than 200 m wide. The castle consisted of the central area, the Hommaru ( 本 丸 ), which was surrounded by the second, further subdivided area Ni-no-maru ( 二 ノ 丸 ) and the third area, the San-no-maru ( 三 ノ 丸 ). These areas are marked with “1” to “3” in the sketch. Overall, the castle is surrounded by a large moat, which is 50 m wide in the north, but now hardly has any water in the south.

In the Hommaru there is the base of a castle tower ( 天 守 閣 , tenshukaku ), which, apart from the corner stones, consists of hardly hewn stones. It is not clear whether there was ever a tower on it. The Hommaru was protected by watchtowers in the east and west.

Some of the castle's structures have been preserved

  • Najima gate from the previous castle.
  • Base of the castle tower, red in the sketch,
  • Main gate ( 大 手 門 , Ōtemon ), in the sketch "H",
  • Shiomi watchtower, blue in the sketch,
  • Tamon'yagura, yellow in the sketch,
  • Southern watchtower ( 南 三階 櫓 , Minami-sangai-yagura ), green in the sketch.

The main gate to the Hommaru ( 本 丸 正門 , Hommaru seimon ) and the watchtowers Tsukimi ( 月 見 櫓 , Tsukimi-yagura ) and Hanami ( 花 見 櫓 , Hanami-yagura ) have been moved to the grounds of Sōfuku-ji .
