Grenchen Castle (Canton of Solothurn)
Grenchen Castle

The castle Grenchen , even bed Lesch loss called, was in the year 1000 above the church today Grenchen and Bettlach in today's Canton Solothurn founded and is one of the early clearing castles in the Jura in Switzerland .

history

At the beginning the hilltop castle consisted of a wooden castle and a rampart , only around the year 1150 was it rebuilt as a stone castle with a residential tower and several extensions by its owners, the barons of Grenchen . The main castle is on the Schlossfluh , the lower castle on the Hofacherfluh . By 1200 the annexes were enlarged and an oven was installed. The castle was inhabited until the early 14th century.

When a prison tower had to be built in Grenchen, the Solothurn council released the ruins of the castle for this purpose as a quarry in 1583.

In 1930 Germann Leimer von Bettlach discovered a treasure from the 14th century in the castle. The find contained 300 silver flakes (prefabricated products for coins), some coins, a small silver bar and an iron bar.

In 1959 and 1961, the Grenchen Museum Society initiated the archaeological investigation of the castle. The walls of the ruin were restored and preserved after the excavations. The finds from the excavations and a model of the castle have since been exhibited in the Grenchen cultural and historical museum.

In 2011 the historical association Bettlach and the museum society Grenchen organized an action day Burg Grenchen - Bettleschloss . The ruin was freed from the overgrown vegetation, the walls were repaired and the castle entrance renewed.
