History and layout of the castle
Kōriyama Castle was used in the Sengoku period by Tsutsui Junkei ( 筒 井 順慶 ; 1559–1584), Toyotomi Hidenaga ( 豊 臣 秀 長 ; 1540–1591), Mashita Nagamori ( 増 田 長盛 ; 1554–1615) and others. Castle administrators were appointed at the beginning of the Edo period, but the castle burned down in connection with the siege of Osaka in 1615.
As the first lord of the castle, Mizuno Katsunari ( 水 野 勝 成 ; 1564-1651) Kōriyama, who rebuilt the castle the following year. Already in 1619 Matsudaira Tadaakira ( 松 平 忠明 ; 1583-1644) from the Okudaira branch moved into the castle. He designed the Ni-no-maru castle district. After various lords of the castle, Yanagisawa Yoshisato ( 柳 沢 吉 里 ; 1687–1745) took over the castle in 1724 . The Yanagisawa remained lords of the castle until the Meiji Restoration in 1868.
The castle, located on a hill, had an area of 300,000 m² and consisted of the districts of Hommaru, Ni-no-maru, San-no-maru, which are separated by the moats Sakyō-bori ( 左 京 堀 ), Unagi-bori ( 鰻 堀 ) and Uguisu-bori ( 鶯 堀 ) were protected. Further out, the castle town was protected by the outer moat, the Soto-bori. The main gate ( 大 手 門 , Ōte-mon ), also known as the “willow gate” ( 柳 御 門 , Yanagi-gomon ), was located in the southwest corner of the castle . Other gates were the "Cherry Blossom Gate" ( 桜 門 , Sakura-mon ) on the northeast corner , the "West Gate" ( 西門 , Nishi-mon ) on the west side of Ni-no-maru, and the "South Gate" ( 南門 , Minami-mon ) on the southwest corner, facing the city. The Hommaru was surrounded by its own moat. The five-story castle tower was located there.
Currently, the Ni-no-maru castle district is home to the municipal high school, and the town hall is located in San-no-maru. The city's middle school is located in the north. The oitemon ( 追 手 門 ) and the two-story corner watchtower ( 向 櫓 , Mukai-yagura ) nearby have been recreated as replicas. On the southern edge of the Ni-no-maru high stone walls and the moat have been preserved.
