history

The forerunner of the castle was a system that the Kaminoyama, a branch of the Tendō, created in the Sengoku period . In 1514, the lord of the castle, Kaminoyama Yoshifusa, was defeated by Date Tanemune, who thus took over the castle. After Yoshifusa's death in 1520, his son Takenaga Yoshitada was able to regain the castle, but it was conquered in 1580 by the enemies of the Tendō, the Mogami . When these were deposed in 1622, various daimyō took over the castle until 1628 Toki Yoriyuki ( 土 岐 頼 行 ; 1608–1685) became lord of the castle and expanded it extensively. After the Toki were moved, the Bakufu had the buildings in the central area, the Hommaru, demolished. When the Fujii-Matsudaira took over the castle , the second castle area, the Ni-no-maru, became the seat of the residence.

The Hommaru was laid out at the highest point of the hill. It had a watchtower on the southeast side, while the gate was with a two-story watchtower on the east side. Beneath this was the Ni-no-maru on the west and east sides, taking advantage of the terrain.

On the west side of the castle a remnant of the "inner ditch" ( 内 堀 , Uchibori ) and part of the earth wall have been preserved. Part of the samurai quarter has also been preserved. In 1982 the castle tower ( 天主 閣 , Tenshukaku ) was restored as a museum in Ni-no-maru . Part of the castle complex now forms the Tsukioka Park ( 月 丘 公園 , Tsukioka-kōen ).
