The Nagahama Castle ( Japanese 長浜城 Nagahama-jō ) is a historical Japanese castle in Nagahama in Shiga prefecture in Japan .
history
Nagahama Castle was built in the years 1575–1576 by Hashiba Hideyoshi (who later became known as Toyotomi Hideyoshi ) in the former village of Kunitomo as a low castle ( hirashiro ). Before that he had ruled from Odani Castle , but found it increasingly difficult because it was a hilltop castle ( yamashiro ). Hideyoshi was succeeded as lord of the castle by Yamanouchi Kazutoyo after the Battle of Shizugatake in 1583 . Kazutoyo in turn was replaced by Naitō Nobunari after the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 . In 1615, by order of the Tokugawa government , the castle was demolished and parts of it were used in the construction of Hikone Castle .
Current
Nagahama Castle is now a park. Most of the castle is now in ruins , but the main tower ( tenshu ) was reconstructed from concrete in 1983. Inside is the Nagahama Historical Museum.
