Oka Castle was built as a mountain castle in the Middle Ages at the beginning of the Kamakura period . It lies on a mountain nose around which the rivers Shirataki ( 白 滝 川 ) in the north and Inaba ( 稲 葉 川 ) in the south unite. Since the Kemmu period (1334-1336), the Shika ( 志 賀 ) were higher vassals of the Ōtomo lords of the castle. In the battle against the Shimazu in 1586 Shika Chikatsugu ( 志 賀 親 次 ; 1566-1660) successfully defended the castle with all his might. When the Ōtomo lost their power in the conflict, the Shika also lost the castle in 1594, which now fell to Nakagawa Hidenari ( 中 川 秀 成 ; 1570–1612).

Under the Nakagawa, the medieval castle with high stone walls was rebuilt into a modern one. Originally the castle had the usual three areas of Hommaru ( 本 丸 ), Ni-no-maru ( 二 の 丸 ) and San-no-maru ( 三 の 丸 ). There was no castle tower, its function was taken over by a three-story watchtower in Hommaru. In 1636 the castle was expanded to include a western area, the Nishi-no-maru ( 西 の 丸 ). The residence was now being built there.

After the Meiji Restoration, all of the castle's structures fell into disrepair. Only the stone walls were preserved, they show a particularly careful construction. In 1987 a mock-up of the three-story watchtower was temporarily built. There is evidence that it was the ruins of Oka Castle that inspired the young composer Taki Rentarō to compose "Castle Ruins in the Moonlight" .
