In the castle Rambach is a hill fort on the western outskirts of Wiesbaden - Rambach in southern Taunus . The facility in the Burg district is undated.

Location and description

The castle stables of the Höhenburg are located on the western outskirts, south of the local sports field. It is a single wall, which is divided into an east and a west part. Overall, it has a length of 190 meters. The eastern part is about 65 meters long. There was a trench around 2.20 meters deep and 6 meters wide that can no longer be found today. The still visible wall is around 2 meters high (around 0.6 meters on the inside). There is a 24 meter wide gap between the eastern and western parts.

On the western part there is now a ditch around 5 meters wide and 0.6 meters deep. Originally there was a pointed ditch 1.80 meters deep. The outer embankment, which is up to 2 meters high, is also clearly visible.

The shape of the wall separates the end of a ridge on the north side, which is at risk of attack. All other mountain slopes drop 50 to 60 meters into the valley floor.

Exploration

Excavations took place in 1913 by Christian Ludwig Thomas . He found out that the wall was based on a wood-stone-earth construction with a dry stone wall made of Taunus slate. Due to a lack of finds, dating is not possible.

Monument protection

The area of the ramparts is a ground monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act . Investigations and targeted collection of finds are subject to approval, and accidental finds are reported to the monument authorities.
