The castle Ried is an Outbound hilltop castle on the castle hill of the city of Ried im Innkreis in Upper Austria .

history

The first mention of castrum Ried took place in 1220, but the noble Reginger von Ried and his brother Wernhard, sons of Pilgrims von Bodenhofen (municipality of Sankt Marienkirchen bei Schärding), named themselves next to Bodenhofen also after Ried, probably at that time was still a manor house. They were grandsons of Albuin I of Stein Castle and were the patron saints of the Reichersberg monastery . The Lords of Ried died out as noble free around 1170, but continued as the Babenberger Ministeriale von Staatz in the Weinviertel. In 1248 Ried came into the possession of the Bavarian dukes, who appoint the burgraves as administrators. In the first half, Ried was expanded to protect against the Muhringer von Eberschwang. In 1292 a Heinrich von Aham appears here . In 1310 the castle was set on fire when it was handed over to the Austrians. After the reconstruction in 1364, the castle and the market were devastated by Duke Rudolf IV of Austria . Reconstruction began in 1369. More news from Ried Castle comes from the time of the Peasant Wars . In 1628 the festivals and market were besieged. 1641 Ried comes to Hans von Tattenbach . In the War of Spanish Succession Ried was fought and was occupied by General Gronsfeld 1704 under the help of Baron von Hoheneck. Rittmeister Graf von Cernin is named as defense attorney . The Ried Castle was largely destroyed and made uninhabitable.

Around 1780 the fortress was only a two-story house floor. A Mr. von Zenger and a Marleitner are named as other owners. In the Peace of Teschen , Ried became Austrian in 1779. In 1809 Napoleon Bonaparte set up his quarters here. Between 1810 and 1816 the Bavarian regional court was housed in the castle. In 1815 the footbridge collapsed from the Merkt. In 1816 Ried became Austrian again. After the Innkreisamt was dissolved, the district administration took over the castle in 1849.

Ried Castle today

As can be seen in the engraving by Michael Wening from 1721, the castle was a three-storey building with two additional attic storeys, consisting of a main building and an auxiliary building. The Rieder Schlossberg was secured to the south by a mountain drop and a wall and connected to the market with a bridge. After various destructions (1704) only a two-story house floor remained of the castle complex. In 1902 the castle complex was bought by the municipality of Ried after the kuk district administration had moved to the main square and converted into a hospital. Today the Schlossberg is largely built on by various buildings belonging to the hospital, which is run by the Sisters of Mercy. There is nothing left of the former castle today.
