history

Castle plan

Sadogawa Castle is located south of the Hitotsuzegawa River (一 ツ 瀬 川) as a low castle with a higher area. It is not known when the castle was built, perhaps in the Semmu era (1334-1336) by the Tajima (田島 家) belonging to the Itō clan (伊 東). Itō Yoshisuke (伊 東 義 祐; 1512-1585) came here from Tonokōri Castle (都 於 郡城) in 1536, but had to move to Miyazaki Castle (宮 崎 城) for some time when the castle burned down the following year. Yoshisuke undertook a fundamental repair of the castle around 1542 and temporarily ruled over the entire Hyūga province , but had to surrender to the Tajima in 1577 and fled to Bungo .

Shimazu Iehisa (島 津 家 久; 1547–1587), younger brother of Shimazu Yoshihisa (島 津 義 久; 1533–1611), took over the castle. In 1587, after the pacification of Kyushus by Toyotomi Hideyoshi , Shimazu Toyohisa (島 津 豊 久; 1570–1600), Iehisa's son, was lord of the castle. Toyohisa fell in the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 , the castle was temporarily taken over by the Tokugawa , who sent an administrator. In 1603 Shimazu Yukihisa (島 津 征 久; 1550–1610), coming from Ōsumitarumizu (大 隅 垂 水), took over the castle. Shimazu Tadaoki (島 津 忠 興; 1599–1637) followed in 1625. He tore down the castle tower located on the hill (天 守 閣, Tenshukaku, red square) and other facilities and built a new residence on the northeast edge of the hill.

In 1869 Shimazu Tadahiro (島 津 忠 寛; 1828-1896) moved the administration of the Han to Hirose (広 瀬) and gave up the castle the following year. - On the basis of excavations in 1993, the residence with the entrance area, the reception hall (大 広 間), the prince's private area, the shoin (書院), the garden, the upper gate and the earthworks, the trenches were restored. The building also serves as a museum on the history of the castle (土 佐 原 城 址 歴 史 資料 館, Tosawarajō-ato rekishi shiryōkan). The castle complex there with earth walls and waterless ditches is preserved on the hill.

The attachment

The castle, which was built in the 15th century, shows the style of the time: the castle was protected on three sides by earthen walls and ditches , the individual castle areas were scattered over the site, only separated by dry ditches. On the plan of the castle is the central area, the Hommaru (本 丸), marked with 1, the second castle area Ni-no-maru (二 の 丸) with 2, the outer bailey Minami-no-jō (南 の 城) with 3, the further outer bailey Matsuomaru (松尾 丸) with 4th row indicates the approximate location of the residence (御 殿, Goten). When the residence below was rebuilt at the beginning of the 17th century, the actual castle fell into disrepair. Hardly anything can be seen today.
