Tennstedt Castle

The castle Tennstedt is an Outbound Wasserburg in Bad Tennstedt in today's Unstrut Hainich in Thuringia .

location

The lost castle of Bad Tennstedt was located in the eastern edge of the former city of the Unstrutaue . The moated castle was in front of the so-called Osthofer Tor .

history

The favorable strategic location of Bad Tennstedt underpins the tradition that there was a royal court in the early Middle Ages . It is believed that the courtyard with the two fortifications on the hills north of the city was secured. The Tennstedter Wasserburg was important for the Thuringian landgraves because of the Eisenach - Weißensee- Neuenburg road. From 1160 to 1170 the Thuringian landgrave bought the place and had the moated castle built. There are hardly any stones left from the Tennstedt castles because they were all built into the city wall, including the moated castle, even though it was already included. The last landgrave bailiff sold the moated castle to the city in 1438. The town hall was built in 1610 from stones from the moated castle.
