Thamsbrück Castle

The castle Thamsbrück was in Thamsbrück in today's Unstrut Hainich in Thuringia .

location

The hilltop castle was located at the highest point in the village above the Unstrut in the southwest corner of the village. It was surrounded by ramparts and moats and inserted into the city fortifications . Now is still the high quadrangular keep .

history

A bridge over the Unstrut was mentioned as early as 900. This traffic facility and the later interests of the Thuringian landgraves were reasons for the importance of the village. The castle was most likely built in 1149 by a landgrave of Thuringia. She also served his brother. The castle and the later city were courts in Thuringia. Bailiffs administered Thamsbrück. In 1335, the Erfurt vigilantes damaged the place a lot. The last bailiff was here until 1490, when the seat was moved to Langensalza . The Lords of Berlepsch then owned the facility until the late 18th century.

The castle was bought by the city in 1858 and demolished for a factory except for the keep.
