Toyama Castle

The Toyama Castle ( Jap. 富山城 , Toyama-jō ) is located in the city of Toyama ( Okayama Prefecture ). It was the seat of a branch of the Maeda clan with an income of 100,000 koku .

history

Toyama Castle was the seat of Jimbō Nagamoto ( 神 保 長 職 ) as early as 1543 . In 1581 Sassa Narimasa ( 佐 々 成 政 ), vassal of Oda Nobunaga , took over the castle, which was then conquered and destroyed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1585 . In 1587 the area came to the Maeda from the province of Kaga . Later the restored castle became the old seat of Maeda Toshinaga ( 前 田 利 長 ). The third prince, Maeda Toshitsune ( 前 田 利 常 ), transferred the area to his second son Toshitsugu ( 利 次 ) with an income of 100,000 koku as a branch loan. Toshitsugu had initially planned to make Hyakuzuka ( 百 塚 ) his home, but gave up for financial reasons and settled in Toyama. This Maeda branch resided there until 1868.

The castle consisted of the three fortifications separated by moats, Hommaru (called Higashi-no-maru here) with a castle tower, Ni-no-maru, Nishi-no-maru and outer castles. In 1714 the residence in Hommaru burned down completely, the family temporarily resided in an adjacent area. After a fire broke out again in 1831, the Chitose Residence ( 千 歳 御 殿 , Chitose goten ) was completed in 1849 , but it was lost due to a fire in 1855. In 1863 buildings were lost again in a fire.

In 1873 the castle buildings were demolished and the castle area largely became an urban area. In 1954 the concrete castle tower was rebuilt and used as a museum.
