Farzana Doctor (born December 16, 1970 in the Republic of Zambia ) is a Canadian writer , film producer and social worker .

Life

Farzana Doctor was born in Zambia in 1970. Her parents are from India. In the early 1970s, the family emigrated from Zambia to Canada.

Doctor graduated from McMaster University in 1990 with a Master of Social Work . Doctor works as a social worker and psychotherapist as well as a consultant at the Center for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto .

As a member of the queer video collective Friday Night Productions, she co-produced the documentary Rewriting The Script: A Loveletter to Our Families in 2001 .

Doctors prose and poetry appeared a. a. in Siren Magazine and the anthology Aurat Durbar - The Court of Women. Writings by Women of South Asian Origin . In 2007 her debut novel Stealing Nasreen was published for the Masala! Mehndi! Masti! People's Choice Award was nominated. In 2011 she received the Dayne Ogilvie Grant for LGBT Emerging Writers from the Writers' Trust of Canada. Her second novel Six Meters of Pavement won the Rainbow Award for Best Contemporary Lesbian General Fiction in 2011 and the Lambda Literary Award 2012 in the Lesbian Fiction category . Since 2009 Doctor has curated a reading series in Brockton Village, Toronto, whose guest readers are supposed to reflect Canadian literature and Canadian diversity .
