Upladen Castle

The Upladen Castle (also Uplathe , Uflach or Opladen - not to be confused with Leverkusen 's Opladen district, which was also called Upladen in the Middle Ages ) was a long-gone moth near Montferland in the Dutch province of Gelderland . Its exact location is not known, it is suspected with great probability in the district of Zeddam and a corresponding remnant is shown. There she stood on an artificial hill, which corresponds to the description of Albert von Metz ; archaeological finds support this assumption.

history

Upladen was built by Count Wichmann von Hamaland after he had converted his castle on the neighboring Elterberg into a monastery.

Upladen is best known for the resistance that Wichmann's daughter Adela later offered together with Count Balderich von Drenthe against Lotharingia's rule over Hamaland. After Count Wichmann III. from the Billunger family had been murdered on October 6, 1016 after a stay in Upladen in the immediate vicinity, the suspicion fell on Balderich, whereupon Balderich holed up in Upladen. After a siege and Balderich's flight, the castle was captured and razed by Bishop Adalbald II of Utrecht (1010-1026).
