Ussel Castle ( French Château d'Ussel , Italian Castello di Ussel ) is a hilltop castle that towers above Châtillon in the Aosta Valley in Italy on a rock spur that slopes steeply on three sides .
The castle was built around 1350 by Ebalo (Yblot) II. Di Challant , the Counts Challant and the House of Savoy took turns in ownership. At last it served as a prison, after which the castle fell into disrepair.
Already in ruins in the 19th century , extensive maintenance work was carried out in the 20th century. The oldest parts of the late medieval castle date from the first half of the 14th century. Thanks to financial donations from Marcel Bich , the facility was saved from further deterioration. Today the castle serves as a place for exhibitions and can only be visited then.
