The Waterlappe Castle is a lost moated castle near Bremen , a district of the municipality of Ense in the Soest district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

Probably in the second half of the 14th century around 1365/70, after the end of Fürstenberg Castle, Waterlappe Castle was built by the von Fürstenberg family . In 1370 it was declared an open house for the city of Soest . It was the ancestral seat of the von Fürstenberg family until 1633 and gave its name to a line of this house. The castle was a strong fortress in the 14th and 15th centuries and served the members of the house as a base for various feuds. The fact that a feudal chamber of the Fürstenbergs with aristocratic and non-aristocratic feudal people developed here speaks for the significance.

It was a fairly large four-wing building with moats surrounded. Remnants of the graves are still visible in the area. The castle was badly damaged during the Truchsessian War and destroyed in the Thirty Years War and not rebuilt.
