location

The ruins of the Höhenburg are on the Fürstenberg above Höingen. It belonged to the Duchy of Westphalia and was strategically located on the border with the County of Arnsberg . The main castle was on "Richters Köpfchen", the outer castle further away on the place of today's chapel .

history

The castle was first mentioned in 1295. At the same time, the first castle man, Hermann von Fürstenberg, is mentioned, and with that, the first documentary mention of the barons von Fürstenberg family, which is still flourishing today, was made . This Hermann came from the von Binolen family ( Hönnetal ), but later named himself von Fürstenberg after his official residence.

The castle was the subject of numerous military actions:

  • 1303/04 Destruction of the complex by Count Everd von der Mark in his feud against Archbishop Wigbold ,
  • 1307/09 Archbishop Heinrich rebuilds the castle, on December 8th, 1309 he is in the castle and issues two documents,
  • 1311 Count Engelbert II von der Mark destroys the castle,
  • 1313 Bishop Heinrich rebuilds the castle,
  • 1343/44 final destruction by the allied Counts of Arnsberg and von der Mark.

During this time, members of the von Fürstenberg family sat as castle men in Werl and built Waterlappe Castle around 1365/70, which was the ancestral seat of the family until 1633. When the county of Arnsberg was transferred to the elector of Cologne in 1368, the border castle on the Fürstenberg lost its importance. The now Cologne city of Neheim took on the protective function against the Märker in this area.

investment

The medieval ring-shaped walls, which are protected as ground monuments , can still be seen in the forest on the Fürstenberg .

A distinction must be made between two attachments:

a) the Oldenburg , a large rampart in which the chapel is located,
b) Richter's head, a small medieval stone castle located lower down.

Isolated ruins of the stone castle "Richters Köpfchen" can still be seen. The chapel on the top of the mountain has been attested there since 1429.
