history

The company was founded in 1970 as Burgenländische Erdölgewinnungsgesellschaft mbH and supplied the first Burgenland industrial company with natural gas from September 29th. On November 23, 1981 BEGAS and BGV - Burgenländische Gasversorgungsgesellschaft mbH were merged to form BEGAS - Burgenländische Erdgasversorgungsgesellschaft mbH.

The conversion into a stock corporation took place on May 10, 1982. The owners were the Province of Burgenland and the natural gas-supplied Burgenland communities.

On April 4, 1990, the state shares were brought into Burgenland Holding AG, shortly afterwards the company was partially privatized. These measures led to a change in the ownership structure. BEGAS shareholders were the natural gas-supplied municipalities of Burgenland with 51% and Burgenland Holding AG with 49%, which are part of BEGAS - Gemeindeanteilsverwaltung AG. The province of Burgenland was no longer majority owner.

The statutory provisions associated with the liberalization of the Austrian natural gas market in 2002 required the separation of network operation and natural gas trading. In addition to BEGAS - Burgenländische Erdgasversorgungs-AG, which is responsible for network operation, BEGAS Energievertrieb GmbH & Co KG was founded in October 2002 for natural gas trading and BEGAS - Wärme & Service GmbH for energy services.

On June 3, 2003, ENERGIEALLIANZ Austria GmbH joined BEGAS Energievertrieb GmbH & Co KG as a general partner.

Due to restructuring measures, BEGAS - Wärme & Service GmbH, BEGAS Kraftwerk GmbH and Biomassekraftwerk Oberpullendorf Errichtungs- und Betriebs GmbH were merged into BEGAS - Burgenländische Erdgasversorgungs-Aktiengesellschaft on October 1st, 2009 and the network division was spun off into BEGAS Netz GmbH. Subsequently, the company name was changed to BEGAS Energie AG at BEGAS - Burgenländische Erdgasversorgungs-Aktiengesellschaft.

In July 2012, BEWAG and BEGAS merged. From October 1, 2012, Energie Burgenland AG emerged .
