Burghaus Gransau (North Rhine-Westphalia)
Gransau Castle House

The Burghaus Gransau was part of the Neheim fortifications in the Middle Ages .

history

The building was part of the former Neheimer Burg. In the 15th and 16th centuries it was owned by the hereditary corpses of Fürstenberg-Neheim . As an inheritance, the building passed into the possession of von Strünkede and von Falkenberg. In 1680 the Fabri family and in 1745 the Meininghaus family are named as owners. The property has been owned by the Cosack family since 1763. The Gransauhof was one of the few buildings that survived the great city fire of 1807. At that time, the tenant was Theodor von Fürstenberg-Stammheim, who had been expelled from his property on the left bank of the Rhine and who, with his brother Friedrich Leopold, helped care for the homeless from the castle house. The building is now a listed building.

construction

It is located above the Ruhr valley on the southwest side of the former castle. Later it was in direct connection with the city wall. The back of today's building also stands on the city wall. At the time of the fortified city, the Burgmannshof was roughly the geographic center of the city. The ground floor dates from the 17th century. It is plastered and made of solid construction. However, the core of the building dates from the High Middle Ages. A half-timbered first floor with profiled filler wood was placed on the ground floor. In the 19th century the upper floor on the courtyard side was extended by half a floor. The first renovation measures took place in the 1950s. At that time the building was provided with a gable roof. Further conservation measures were carried out in the 1980s when the roof of the castle courtyard was re-covered. Noteworthy are the cat's pavement and the wrought-iron courtyard gate.
