The Falkenburg castle ruin , also known as Falkenstein , is an abandoned hilltop castle near Seligenthal , a district of Floh-Seligenthal in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district in Thuringia .

location

The castle site is located on the Hohe Straße from Schmalkalden through the Haderholzgrund to the Rennsteig on a striking porphyry rock with a rectangular rampart in the east, approx. 2000 m northeast of Seligenthal above the valley of the Tambacher water .

history

The early historical Fliehburg was probably built to protect the old trade route. It served as a temporary refuge for the residents of scattered settlements on the western slope of the three Hühnberge, such as Hugesdambach or the Molmersbacher. There is still no documentary evidence. A dating of the complex is not yet known. In 1227 it was probably the resting place of the Landgrave of Thuringia, accompanied by his wife Elisabeth von der Wartburg, when they said goodbye in Schmalkalden at the Hessenhof.

The complex consisted of a palisade surrounded by a water-filled protective moat of Germanic design. It formed a rectangular system with the Falkenburgstein boulder integrated in the west.

Todays use

Wall and moat remains from the former castle complex have been preserved. The complex was placed under protection by the Thuringian State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology as a ground monument .
