The Scharnstein castle ruins are the ruins of a rock castle on a cliff above the Tiessenbachtal in the municipality of Scharnstein in Upper Austria .

history

The castle was probably built by the Counts of Rebgau in the 12th century. In 1499 it was bought by the Habsburg Roman-German king and later Emperor Maximilian I.

In 1538 the castle burned down completely "because of carelessness" and has been in ruins ever since. The guardianship was moved to the new building near the village, Neuscharnstein or Schafferleithen, today's Scharnstein Castle .

In 1584, Helmhart Jörger , the founder of scythe production in the Almtal, bought the estate. He expanded Neuscharnstein Castle and let the old castle fall into disrepair.

The castle has been owned by the Kremsmünster Abbey since 1626 .

investment

The "Mitterturm" is located above the main castle and the "Hochturm" is located on an even higher rock.

There is a rock chapel at the ascent from the Tiessenbach.
