On November 1, 1979, she was at anchor near Galveston , Texas , with about 55,000 tons of Nigerian oil on board. In the morning of the day the freighter Mimosa, also sailing under the Liberian flag, rammed the Burmah Agate and tore a hole about 2.5 by 4.5 meters in the starboard side of the hull. An explosion occurred and the leaking oil ignited. The Mimosa crew of 26 was rescued, but only 6 out of 37 Burmah Agate crew members survived. About 8,500 tons of oil were released into the environment and another 25,000 tons were burned. The ship burned until January 8, 1980. It was towed to Brownsville on February 1, 1980 and scrapped.
