The origin of the Bursa Malaysia, previously known as the "Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange" (KLSE, Malay : Bursa Saham Kuala Lumpur) dates back to 1930 when the Singapore Stockbrokers' Association was established as the official organization to deal with securities in British -Malaysia to act. As such, it was the first official securities trading company in Malaysia at all, but was not registered under the Malayan Stockbrokers Association until 1937 . The Malayan Stock Exchange was finally established in 1960, and their founding of start soon followed public share trading. The Malayan Stock Exchange had trading rooms in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur that were directly connected by telephone cables.

In 1964 the Stock Exchange of Malaysia was founded. With the separation of Singapore from Malaysia in 1965, the Stock Exchange of Malaysia was renamed the Stock Exchange of Malaysia and Singapore . When monetary fungibility between Malaysia and Singapore ceased in 1973, the Stock Exchange of Malaysia and Singapore was split into the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange Berhad and the Stock Exchange of Singapore. The Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange, which was registered as a Limited on December 14, 1976 , took over the business of the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange Berhad in the same year.

In an attempt to better weather the 1997 Asian Crisis , the exchange completely stopped trading Central Limit Order Book (CLOB) counters, causing a temporary freeze of approximately $ 4.47 billion in shares which affected around 172,000 investors, most of them Singaporeans.

On April 14, 2004, the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange was renamed Bursa Malaysia Berhad as a result of a demutualization , the purpose of which was to improve the competitive position of the stock exchange and to respond to global trends in the stock market by restructuring the stock exchange to become more customer-friendly and market-oriented. The Bursa Malaysia Berhad consisted of a motherboard, a Second Board and MESDAQ with a total market capitalization of 700 billion MYR (about 189 billion US dollars).

The company has since focused on a variety of initiatives aimed at enhancing their product and service offerings in order to increase the liquidity and speed of their markets, improve the efficiency of their businesses and achieve economies of scale in their operations. On March 18, 2005, Bursa Malaysia was listed on the Main Board of Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad with a premium of 17% or RM 0.50 above its trading price of RM 3.00.
