The Bushans ( Polish Bużanie , Ukrainian Бужани Buschany , Russian Бужане Buschane ) were a Slavic tribe before the emergence of the Kievan Rus . They lived in the area on both sides of the upper reaches of the Western Bug in what is now Ukraine .

Surname

This is where the name comes from: Bug > Buschanen , to be pronounced with a voiced sh , actually Bužanen .

history

In the 9th century, the Bavarian geographer mentions the Bushans for the first time and mentions the number of 230 smaller castles (i.e. settlement centers). In the 10th century they come to the Kievan Rus . The Nestor Chronicle names Busk Castle as the center. Soon afterwards, at the beginning of the 11th century, they evidently join the Volhynian association and disappear from the chronicles as an independent people.

Some researchers believe that both the Bushans and Volhynians were descended from the Dulebs .
