The Trudering bus accident occurred on September 20, 1994 in the Trudering district of Munich .

the accident

During the construction work on the eastern extension of the underground line 2 to the Messestadt Riem , water penetrated the tunnel. A cavity formed under the road in the loose gravel of the Munich gravel plain. Construction workers involved in the construction wanted to warn the bus drivers of the buses above the tunnel, but only two of the three buses were able to vacate the site in time. At 6:46 p.m. the pavement collapsed and a bus fell, rear first, into the resulting hole. Since the bus driver opened the doors on time, most of the passengers were able to get off the bus and survive. The bus driver was rescued by the Munich fire brigade . A woman could only be rescued dead by divers. The bodies of a construction worker who wanted to warn the bus driver and a passenger who was in the back of the bus could only be recovered after eight months. A total of three people were killed and 36 were injured, some seriously.

root cause

The cause sand cracks were found in the otherwise impermeable Flinzmergelschicht proceeded under the gravel layer. The vertical cracks could only have been discovered with a lot of luck during the test drillings and were not caused by the construction work. As a result of the report, the investigations were discontinued due to possible planning errors.
