Butembos main street

Butembo is a city in the Democratic Republic of the Congo . It is located in the province of North Kivu in the east of the country and is the second largest city in the province after Goma . To the east of Butembo is the Virunga National Park . According to an estimate, 217,625 people lived in the city in 2012.
Until the civil war in Eastern Congo , Butembo was an important center of the region, with a large market center as well as a hospital and an airport. The Université Catholique du Graben has been located in the city since 1989 .
Butembo and its suburb Katwa were significantly affected by the Ebola fever epidemic that raged in the Congo from 2018 to 2020 .
