Butler's Rangers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Butlers Rangers were a ranger force founded and commanded by Lieutenant Colonel John Butler .

The troops were formed in 1777 and lasted until the British Army withdrew from North America in 1784. The rangers had their headquarters in Fort Niagara , near the Niagara River . Their military impact is mainly attributed to the recruitment of many Indian soldiers. The troop fought in what is now New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, Kentucky and Michigan. Historians described the troop as the most successful unit of the War of Independence .
