Byklestigen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Byklestigen is a 1-kilometer stretch of trail along the Otra River in Setesdal, Norway . The trail was first mentioned in 1770 and was the only connection between Bykle and southern Setesdal until 1879 .

The Byklestigen is located on a particularly steep mountain wall and leads over smooth rocks and steps along a gorge. It is so steep that it was previously impossible to conquer it on horseback, unless a lot of people helped. It was particularly difficult to pass in winter because the smooth stones were covered with snow and ice. In 1879 the first street was opened and the Byklestigen became less important.

In 1975 the old path, which had almost been forgotten after the road was built, was restored and is now a popular hiking trail that is used in the summer months. The Byklestigen was chosen in 1997 as a special cultural asset of the Bykle municipality . Today the Riksvei 9 runs below the pass through a tunnel.
