Byron Fidetzis ( Greek Βύρων Φιδετζής Vyron Fidetzis [ ˈvirɔn fiðɛˈdzis ]; * in Thessaloniki ) is a Greek cellist and conductor.

Life

Fidetzis first studied violoncello and music theory at the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki. A scholarship enabled him to continue his studies at the Vienna Music Academy , with Vladimir Orloff , André Navarra and Senta Benes in the cello subject, and in conducting with Hans Swarowsky .

As a cellist he has performed with all Greek orchestras, but also with numerous orchestras throughout Europe. From 1985 to 1992 he was permanent guest conductor of the Greek State Opera, Athens, since 1987 of the Athens State Orchestra. From 1990 to 1992 he was chief conductor of the State Orchestra in Yekaterinburg , and since 1992 he has regularly conducted the Cappella Russia in Moscow.

The special significance of his work lies in the recording of over 20 recordings of music by Greek composers, including eight complete recordings of operas by the composers Pavlos Carrer , Spyros Samaras , Manolis Kalomiris and Dimitri Mitropoulos , the entire symphonic works of Ioannis Konstantinidis and numerous works by Nikos Skalkottas '. As a chamber musician, he was involved in the reconstruction and recording of works by Emilios Riadis and many other composers.

Fidetzis has been teaching musicology at the University of Athens since 1991, and the Athens Academy honored him with the Spyros Motsenigos Prize .
