César et les Romains were a Yéyé band from Québec in the 1960s .

history

The band formed under the name Questions and consisted of the singer Dino "César" L'Espérance, the guitarist Daniel Lachance, the bassist Maurice Bélanger, the keyboardist Donald Seward and the drummer Jacques Moisan. Maurice Bélanger left the group in 1966, followed by Pierre Sidor as bassist.

After initially appearing as entertainment musicians in hotels, in 1965 they tried to build on the success of other bands in the genre, for which they renamed themselves and appeared in imaginative, appropriately named costumes according to the taste of the time. With the Bobby-Darin cover Splish Splash and Toi et moi , they landed two hits with which they were invited to appear on TV and became known nationwide. With Ce qu'elle volait they reached number 14 in the Canadian charts determined by the music magazine RPM in 1967 . In the spring of 1967 they were tired of appearing disguised as ancient Romans. They burned their costumes on the stage at a concert and then played without costume. They tried to break into the US market that year. After this failed, César et les Romains broke up in 1968.

As part of the compilation Le Retour des Groupes , Dino L'Espérance, Donald Seward and Pierre Sidor got together again to contribute a song. In 1994 the band reunited to record their old hits for the album Je me souviens .
