CWW Kannangara

Crestoper William Wijeyekoon Kannangara (born October 13, 1884 in Randombe, Southern Province , † September 23, 1956 ) was a Sri Lankan lawyer and politician. He was instrumental in the Sri Lankan independence movement and finally from 1937 to 1946 the first Minister of Education of Sri Lanka .

During his tenure, he reformed the country's education system by setting up free schooling and thus enabling children of all social classes to receive an education. The introduction of the so-called central schools ( Madhya Maha Vidhyala ) also led to a good education in rural areas. Because of his achievements in the independence movement and in the field of education, he is considered a national hero and is also known in Sri Lanka as the Father of Free Education .

A bust in honor of Kannangara was erected at Parakramabahu Central College in Polgahawela ( Northwest Province ) .
