The dealer & barbarian expansion is a 2007 addition to the The Settlers of Catan board game by Klaus Teuber for initially 3 to 4 players. Tanja Donner and Michaela Schelk (fine tuning) were responsible for the graphics and the illustration. The characters were designed by Andreas Klober. The extension was published by the Franckh Kosmos publishing house in Stuttgart . It contains 2 large new scenarios and some small scenarios and variants that were previously available separately or only as a giveaway to a limited extent and were partially modified for this expansion. With the expansion, Klaus Teuber fulfills the wishes of many players for variants of the basic game. In March 2010 the game appeared in a graphically revised version.

variants

  • Kind Robber:
The robber may only be placed with players who have at least 3 victory points. This variant is already used by many players and does not require any additional material.
  • Events on Catan:
The dice are replaced by event cards. This addition was already available individually from 2005 or as part of the Atlantis expansion.
  • The harbor master:
This supplement was already available as a download from the Klaus Teuber homepage or in the Atlantis extension from 2005.
  • Catan for two:
This variant was published in 2006 in the Catan News. By introducing imaginary neutral players, the board game can also be played in pairs, which should be particularly interesting for dinks . The variant is also included in the entry-level variant that was released in December 2009.

The campaign

  • The fishermen of Catan:
This scenario was published in 2005 in the Spielbox edition for the trade fair in Essen. Added to this is a lake that replaces the desert and where fish can also be caught. For the iodine supply of the Catanians, however, sea fishing is still important.
  • The rivers of Catan:
The Great River was given as a giveaway at the trade fair in Essen in 2005 and when ordering from the Catan shop. Now an even longer river has been added and the players have to build bridges to get to the other side of the river. In addition, the player with the most gold receives the “richest settler” card (1 victory point) and the player with the least receives the “poor settler” card (-2 victory points). Gold can also be exchanged for raw materials 2: 1.
  • The train of the caravan:
This scenario was given in 2006 as a giveaway at the trade fair in Essen and when ordering the Catan shop as “The Great Caravan”. The camel chips contained there are now replaced by modeled camels.
  • The barbarian attack:
Every time a settlement or city is built, barbarians land on the coast of Catan. If 3 barbarians have arrived on a space, nothing more is produced and settlements and cities lying there can lose their victory points. Ports surrounded by barbarians can no longer be used for trade. In order to drive away the barbarians, the Catan knights can set up. If the knights positioned around a field are in the majority compared to the barbarians, the barbarians are captured, the field produces again and the localities get their function back. Each captured barbarian is worth ½ victory point.
  • Traders & Barbarians:
After the barbarian attack, the castle has to be rebuilt, glass windows and marble are needed. The first is in a glassworks on the opposite side of the island. However, this requires sand for production, which is available near the castle and the marble quarry. But there tools are needed that are produced in the forge in the castle. The players have to use supply wagons to transport the goods to the places where they are needed. Since some scattered barbarians make the roads unsafe, it is important to upgrade the supply wagons, but also to expand your own road network in order not to be dependent on the roads of the enemy.

The campaign scenarios can be combined with the variants, information on this is given in the rulebook. Further combinations were published on the homepage in December 2007.

particularities

Follis of Diocletian

At the beginning of 2007 there was confusion among the players because two different covers of the game were shown on the Internet at the same time. The red cover was only seen at mail order companies and for a short time at Kosmos. The actual (yellow) cover, however, is on the Catan GmbH homepage. Scenes from the alternative cover can be found on the front and back of some event cards.

The Latin phrase "sacra monet augget ress nostr sis" on the gold coins means "You, holy mother of gods, should increase our wealth!" The reverse shows the Roman emperor Diocletian as on the follis.

The knight figures and the barbarians for the "Barbarian Attack" scenario were already used in the battle for Rome as a tribe of horsemen and warriors.

Since April 2008, wooden toy figures have also been available in the Catan Shop. [4]

When the graphics were relaunched in spring 2010, the "Black Knight" development card for the "Barbarian attack" scenario was renamed "Strong Knight".

criticism

The third expansion of the settlers was received with mixed feelings. While there is less criticism of the actual game principles, it is rather criticized that a large part of the content was available long before the publication. Teuber had already published three of the four variants on its homepage or the Siedler-Zeitung, which can be accessed there. The scenarios The Rivers of Catan and The Train of the Caravan were given away under the name The Great River and The Great Caravan in 2005 and 2006 at the international game days in Essen and distributed through the Catan shop. The fishermen of Catan were featured in an issue of the game magazine Spielbox . The two main scenarios of the expansion ( The Barbarian Attack and Traders & Barbarians ), however, are new developments.

It was also criticized that the plastic figures are technically compatible with the wooden figures, but a stylistic breach can be seen visually. This has been taken into account by offering sets of figures with wooden figures in the Catan shop.

In July 2008 the expansion for 5 and 6 players was released.
