Club Baloncesto Islas Canarias , also known under the sponsor name Gran Canaria 2014 , is a Spanish women's basketball club from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria . The first team plays in the Liga Femenina de Baloncesto . The home games are played in the 1000-seat Pabellón La Paterna .

history

The CB Islas Canarias association was founded in 1980 by basketball coach Domingo "Mingo" Díaz Martín and his wife, the former player and today's coach Begoña Santana. In the 1982/83 season, he was promoted to the first division , from which one has not been relegated since. This makes CB Islas Canarias the club with the most years in the first division of Spanish women's basketball.

The club, best known for its excellent youth work, celebrated its greatest successes from the late 1990s to the early 2000s. In the 1994/95 season, the team reached the final of the Spanish Cup for the first time and was defeated there by Dorna Godella 46:65. In the 1997/98 season they again made it into the final of the national cup, this time they failed with 63:86 at Pool Getafe . In the 1998/99 season, Sandra Gran Canaria , as the club was called at the time, conquered both the Spanish Cup and the Ronchetti Cup , the second most important continental competition at the time, with a 136-133 game against Lachen Ramat Hasharon . Only one year later, the Canary Islands successfully defended the national cup and were again in the final of the Ronchetti Cup, but this time they lost to Basket Parma with 116: 127. In addition, after a surprising 2-0 semi-final win against Ros Casares Valencia in the Spanish championship, they made it into the final playoff for the first time, but where CB Islas Canarias failed 2-1 at Real Club Celta Baloncesto . The club reached their last title final so far in the 2002/03 season as part of the EuroCup Women , but lost it 71:80 to Pays d'Aix Basket 13 .
