The Colombian National Library ( Spanish Biblioteca Nacional de Colombia ) in Bogotá 's Santa Fe district is the oldest national library in Latin America and is subordinate to the Colombian Ministry of Culture. It is only accessible to academics and with letters of recommendation .
It was founded in 1777 by the Spanish officer and colonial administrator Manuel de Guirior . The first stocks came from the Jesuit Mission in South America. In 1825, the current library was built on the site of the Colegio Mayor de San Bartolomé at the request of the Vice-President of Greater Colombia Francisco de Paula Santander . Since 1995 all media have to be handed over to the national library once.
The larger donations included the private libraries of writers and politicians such as Miguel Antonio Caro , Marco Fidel Suárez , Rufino José Cuervo , Manuel del Socorro Rodríguez , Germán Arciniegas , Jorge Isaacs , Manuel Ancízar and Eduardo Santos, as well as copies from the United Nations Library. The current inventory includes several incunabula , 610 manuscripts and 22,000 newspapers and magazines, a total of 2 million media.
In addition to its original role, the library also trains librarians.
