The locomotives No. 21 to 33 of the Compagnie de Chemin de Fer Franco-Ethiopien de Jibuti à Addis Abeba ( CFE ) were meter-gauge steam locomotives for freight trains developed by the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works (SLM) , which were later developed by the Société Alsacienne de Constructions Mécaniques ( SACM) were recreated according to drawings from the SLM.
history
The predecessor company of CFE, the Compagnie Impériale des Chemins de fer Éthiopiens (CIE) founded by the Swiss Alfred Ilg , ordered four two-cylinder compound machines with the numbers 21 to 24 from SLM , two of which were delivered in 1902 and the other two in 1903. At the time, the design was typical for locomotives that pulled heavy trains on mountain routes. The smaller high-pressure cylinder was on the right side, the larger low-pressure cylinder on the left side of the locomotive.
After the French CFE had taken over the business from the insolvent CIE in 1909, more freight locomotives were bought, which should come from France. As a result, the Société Alsacienne de Constructions Mécaniques (SACM) delivered eight more locomotives of the same type with the numbers 25 to 32. The series manufactured according to drawings by SLM was internally designated as UG 181 by SACM .
One other locomotive with the number 33 was delivered by SLM in 1914.
The design was further developed by SACM. As early as 1913 it delivered nine UG 190 type locomotives with a larger boiler, which were designed as two-cylinder superheated steam locomotives .
