The Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo ( CHADEMA , Swahili for Party for Democracy and Progress ) is a conservative political party in Tanzania . CHADEMA was founded in 1993 and is a member of the Democrat Union of Africa (DUA), a regional branch of the International Democratic Union (IDU), an association of 80 conservative and Christian-democratic parties.

In the parliamentary elections in Tanzania in 2000 , the party won 4 out of 269 seats in the Tanzanian National Assembly and in the presidential elections in Tanzania in 2005 , CHADEMA candidate Freeman Mbowe was third out of ten candidates with 5.8 percent of the vote. However, she achieved her greatest electoral success to date on October 31, 2010 in the 2010 presidential election in Tanzania , when her candidate Willibrod Peter Sloo was second to the government candidate with a good 26% of the vote. In 2015, Edward Lowassa , who was previously a member of the CCM, received 40.0% of the vote, defeating John Magufuli (CCM).

Chairman Tundu Lissu was shot so badly in 2017 that he was taken to Belgium and operated on several times. In 2019, he was withdrawn from the National Assembly. In June 2020, Chairman Freedom Mbowe was beaten up and broken his leg.
