Presidential election in Tanzania 2010

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The presidential elections in Tanzania 2010 took place on October 31, 2010 and were the 4th free elections in Tanzania since the introduction of the multiparty system in 1992. Observers rated the elections as fundamentally free, peaceful and fair. However, observers from the Commonwealth Secretariat criticized the fact that the long-standing ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) had a clear advantage due to the fact that party and government structures were largely equated.

Results

Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, old and new President of Tanzania

The clear winner of the elections was Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete , the candidate of the ruling CCM, who received more than 60% of all votes. The second-placed Willibrod Peter Slaa from the Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) did not even receive half as many votes and the third-placed Ibrahim Haruna Lipumba from the Civic United Front (CUF) achieved just over 8%. The remaining candidates remained just above or well below 1% of the votes cast. Nevertheless, the result is remarkable: Compared to the 80% result of the presidential elections in 2005 , Kikwete lost a quarter of the votes and since the transition to the multi-party system, with the exception of the first election in 1995, no presidential candidate from an opposition party has achieved a result comparable to Willibrod Peter Slaas 26% . For his party CHADEMA, which so far had not gotten more than 6%, it is also the greatest electoral success in its history.
