Presidential election in Tanganyika 1962
The 1962 presidential election in Tanganyika took place on November 1, 1962.
It was the first elections after the country was granted independence on December 9, 1961 and a republic was proclaimed. Julius Nyerere , leader of the ruling Tanganyika African National Union and acting Prime Minister, won the election with 99.2% of the vote. By 1995 it was to remain the only presidential election that did not take place under the conditions of one -party rule with no opponents.
