CIDA City Campus ( Community and Individual Development Association City Campus ) is a private, state-recognized and non-commercial higher education institution based in Johannesburg , South Africa , which was founded in 1999 and aims to provide higher educational qualifications to African students from poorer backgrounds. The institution calls itself “South Africa's first free university”.

Goals and visions

The targeted support of poorer African students is based on the vision of breaking the downward spiral of poverty and AIDS in Africa and contrasting it with a culture of learning and self-confidence. In order to achieve this goal, qualified specialists are to be trained who are to shape the future of Africa on their own. Talented young Africans should no longer be prevented by their unfavorable economic background from developing into the future leaders of their nation.

In the long term, a CIDA City Campus is to be built in every country in sub-Saharan Africa .

Study and graduation

The CIDA City Campus is located in an Investec Bank building in downtown Johannesburg. All students have access to the Internet and e-mail; The computer laboratory in South Africa, which is equipped with more than 1,000 devices and is therefore the largest according to its own information, is available for teaching. The technical focus of the course is on business administration and information technology .

Students have the opportunity to acquire a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in a four-year course . The CIDA City Campus BBA degree has been officially recognized by the Council of High Education (CHE) of the South African government and a number of other institutions.

With around 20,000 applicants annually, around 1,300 students were enrolled at the CIDA City Campus in 2007. The majority of these students come from the rural areas of South Africa.

The students are obliged to support the university with their own work - for example in the self-organized catering area. During their semester break they go to their home villages and teach there, in order to achieve a multiplier effect. After completing their studies, each graduate pays the tuition fees of a newly enrolled student.
