The headquarters of CIGRE (the international spelling) is Paris, where it was founded in 1921 as a non-profit organization . It owes its now worldwide recognition primarily to its high professional level and the quality of the results. This is reflected in the growing number of members: In 2003 there were around 5,000 personal members from 80 countries, in 2014 there were already 8,000 members from 90 countries. Universities, companies and other institutions can also support the work of CIGRE as “corporate members”; in 2014 there were 1,100.

An important exchange platform is the one-week Cigré conference ( Cigré session ) that takes place in Paris every even-numbered year . In odd-numbered years, the Cigré symposia are held at different locations.

However, the main activity is the continuous work of the Study Committees (Comités d'Etudes ). There are 16 committees, each of which consists of several working groups ( Groupes de Travail ). These working groups deal with relatively narrowly defined subject areas and create publications for them, usually with the character of guidelines. Over 2500 experts are currently active in over 200 working groups. With around 5%, Germany is one of the largest contributors.

The work of the Cigré, namely maintaining membership, is supported in many countries by national committees ( National Committees, Comités Nationaux ). The German work is coordinated in the "DK CIGRE" under the umbrella of the VDE , in Austria the "ÖNC" is responsible within the framework of the OVE , Switzerland has set up a "National Committee Cigré" at the Electrosuisse Association .
