History of origin

The OVE Austrian Electrotechnical Association was in 1883 , in a period of rapid development and distribution of electrical engineering in Vienna founded. The following goals guided the association when it was founded:

  • to promote the development of electrical engineering and
  • at the same time to ensure the safe use of electrotechnical applications,
  • to establish contact between universities and business and
  • to maintain an intensive exchange of information among experts and those interested in this young and revolutionary technology.

Important industry representatives of the time such as Prof. Ernst Mach , Siegfried Marcus and Prof. Josef Stefan joined the association as founding members, a little later Prof. Ludwig Boltzmann too .

In line with its primary goal, the safe use of electrical equipment and systems, the association issued the first safety regulations for electrical engineering as early as 1889. The OVE was thus one of the pioneers in the field of electrical standardization in the international environment .

The association paved the way for technological progress in further developments . Outstanding members of the OVE who have worked in the last few decades have included a .:

Areas

OVE Standardization - Normung & Standardisierung

The OVE is the Austrian electrotechnical standards organization in accordance with the Electrical Engineering Act, as amended in 92 F. The mandate to create standards for electrical engineering is thus legally anchored.

OVE Standardization coordinates the development of national regulations for electrical engineering as well as the adoption of European and international standards in national regulations. The employees offer assistance and advice on the current status of standardization as well as legal backgrounds and administrative issues.

The OVE officially represents Austrian interests as a member of IEC and CENELEC in international and European standardization work . It is thus an essential interface between the Austrian economy , authorities and consumers on the one hand and the international and European standardization organizations on the other.

OVE Certification - Exam & Certification

The OVE is the nationally and internationally accredited certification and inspection body for products, processes and systems for the entire field of electrical engineering and safety technology . With its certifications and approvals, OVE Certification objectively and independently confirms compliance with national and international standards .

With its partner laboratories, OVE Certification carries out conformity tests on products and systems for household, trade and industry. As part of its program for supervised manufacturer testing, OVE Certification reduces the time required for certification and thus enables shorter product development times .

The OVE is represented in IECEE / CEE , IECQ , ETICS and 30 national, European and international committees.

OVE Academy - further education & events

The OVE Academy is the provider of knowledge transfer in the field of electrical engineering, information technology and energy technology . The OVE Academy organizes advanced training for adults such as seminars and lectures and organizes international and national congresses and conferences .

OVE Service GmbH: ALDIS - Lightning detection & lightning research

ALDIS is a joint project by OVE Österreichischer Verband für Elektrotechnik and Austrian Power Grid for lightning location and lightning documentation in Central Europe. ALDIS delivers lightning data to weather services , energy supply companies , insurance companies and experts and is a recognized lightning research center. Research results in the areas of lightning location, lightning physics and the effects of lightning strikes are continuously presented in specialist journals and at international conferences. ALDIS sells lightning data, thunderstorm warnings and interactive thunderstorm maps. ALDIS also offers advice on lightning and surge protection for special systems.

Professional societies

With its specialist societies on the subjects of energy technology , information technology , microelectronics , robotics as well as measurement and automation technology , the OVE promotes active dialogue between science, business and the interested public.

OVE energy technology

OVE Energietechnik brings together representatives from energy companies, the electrical industry, science and authorities. Its aim is to promote the scientific and technical development of electrical energy technology. The annual highlight is the OVE energy technology conference in autumn, at which international experts presented concepts and discussed current topics. As part of the conference, the OVE Energy Technology Prize is also awarded to the next generation of scientists and engineers. Theses at HTLs, technical colleges and universities are awarded.

OVE information technology

OVE Informationstechnik is an Austria-wide platform in the field of information and communication technology and brings together representatives from the fields of business, research and teaching. The goals include exchanging information on technical issues, promoting young technical and scientific talent as well as professional training and further education.

OVE microelectronics

OVE Mikroelektronik is the Austria-wide industry platform in the field of microelectronics and microelectronic systems. Its members include key representatives from business, research and teaching. The goals of the Society for Microelectronic Systems are, in addition to increased cooperation between science and industry, the promotion of young technical and scientific talent as well as professional exchange.

GMAR - Society for Measurement, Automation and Robot Technology

The OVE is the sponsoring association of GMAR, the Austrian platform for measurement , automation and robot technology . The GMAR sees itself as a representation of companies, research institutions, scientific institutions, educational institutions and people in Austria that are active or interested in these areas.

Member organizations

OVE Fem

OVE Fem ( called femOVE until 2018 ) is the female branch network in the OVE for students, professors, experts and female managers from the fields of electrical engineering, information technology and the energy industry. With regular meetings, OVE Fem promotes the exchange of experience and knowledge and makes it easier to find and use synergies. In addition, the platform wants to arouse the interest in technical professions among school girls and show the possibilities based on specific role models, including the annual Girls' Adventure Day! TECH UP .

OVE Young Engineers

The OVE Young Engineers are the network for students and young professionals under the age of 35 in the OVE. The platform sees itself as a link between graduates of a relevant degree and professional electrical engineers and supports young professionals in their career planning with various activities.

Young talent initiatives

Girls! TECH UP is an adventure day for girls between 12 and 16 years of age. Under the motto “You can use technology!”, There is technology to touch at numerous hands-on stations. Numerous technical schools such as the HTL Spengergasse and companies present themselves, technicians and engineers are available to answer questions from the students.

ScienceClip.at is an online science communication platform for students aged ten and over and teachers. A blog , school seminars and the annual video competition are each devoted to a key topic from the world of technology, science and research.

The HTL professor workshop is an advanced training program for HTL teachers in which industry experts pass on their practical experience. The seminar is carried out by APG Austrian Power Grid AG together with OVE and Österreichs Energie.

The OVE Energietechnik Prize is awarded annually to the next generation of scientists and engineers at the OVE Energietechnik conference. Theses at technical colleges , technical colleges and universities are awarded .

Publications

Association magazine e & i

The technical-scientific association magazine "e & i elektrotechnik und informationstechnik" is published eight times a year by Springer-Verlag. It is the only technical and scientific journal in the German-speaking area that publishes articles from the entire field of electrical engineering and information technology. Each issue is devoted to a scientific topic. The spectrum ranges from microelectronics, information and communication technology, control technology and automation, electrical mechanical engineering, energy conversion and energy supply as well as the energy industry to environmental protection. In the journal section, e & i provides information about the latest from the industry.

OVE series of publications

The OVE series is a publication series of the OVE with the character of a single volume for the publication of works in the field of electrical engineering. Within the OVE series of publications, a separate series for the publication of habilitations and dissertations was established in 2010 .

OVE position papers

As the industry representative for electrical engineering, information technology and the energy industry, OVE publishes position papers on current industry issues. In December 2019, for example, an OVE position paper on the energy transition was published.
